How to compact and repair your database

With regular use your Microsoft Access database will experience "bloat", and will need to be compacted for optimum performance. Your Microsoft Access database can also become corrupted during regular use and need repairing.

A simple compact and repair utility is included on your Destination Software installation disc, in the "Utilities" folder. The utility is also available for download here. The installation file is named "JetCU40.exe" - double click this file to install the compact utility. You will be prompted for a location for the utility named JETCOMP.exe: choose a location that is easily remembered, like your Windows Desktop.

To compact your database:

1. You will need to know the name and location of your database. By default, the file is named "Data2000.mdb" and is located in the folder "Program Files\Planology\Destination Software\". If you chose a different installation directory, moved the database, or installed Destination Software in a networked environment on a shared file server, your database location will differ. You may need to get this information from your system administrator.

2. If you are running Destination Software in a networked environment with the database residing on a shared file server, MAKE SURE ALL USERS HAVE EXITED THE SOFTWARE BEFORE PROCEEDING. You will not be able to compact the database while users are logged in. It is also recommended that you either install the compact utility on the network server where the database resides, or copy the database to the computer on which the compact utility is installed (then copy it back to the server after compacting). This will dramatically reduce the time needed to compact the database, and will reduce the possibility of errors.

3. Write down the name and location of the database. You will need this later.

4. Run the compact and repair utility by double clicking the JETCOMP.exe file you previously installed.

5. Next to the "Database to Compact From (Source)" box, click the button labeled "..." Browse to the location of your database.

7. Next to the "Database to Compact Into (Destination)" box, click the button labeled "..." Browse to the location of your database.

8. The Source and Destination database names must be unique. In the "Database to Compact Into (Destination)" box, change the file name to reflect the compact and repair process. Ex: change "Data2000.mdb" to "Data2000_Compacted.mdb"

9. Leave all other options as they are, and click the "Compact Button"

10. Upon successful completion, you will have two (2) copies of your database: the original, and a compacted and repaired copy. You will need to rename the compacted and repaired copy to the original filename in order for Destination Software to recognize it. Rename the original file to "Data2000.old", and rename the compacted and repaired copy from "Data2000_Compacted.mdb" to "Data2000.mdb"

11. If you copied the database from a network file server, make sure to copy it back to the server.
